British Troops that Fought in India under Wellington

Before he became famous in Spain and at Waterloo, Arthur Wellesley served his military apprenticeship in India 1797-1805, commanding the 33rd Foot Regiment in the invasion of Mysore and then leading a column of British and Sepoy troops in the Second Mahratta War. Born the same year as Napoleon, Wellesley is better known by his titles Viscount Wellington of Talavera, earned for his success in that battle in 1810, and later as Earl and then Duke of Wellington for his victories in the Peninsula.

The fighting in India during the period of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars was of vital importance to England, and wargamers can now refight the crucial battles in which Wellesley rose to the rank of Major General. Redoubt Enterprises has produced a line of 25mm figures called "Wellington's Indian Battles" which are available in the U.S. from Miniature Service Center, 1525 Bridge #163, Yuba City, CA 95993. Phone: (916) 673-5169 (see ad on page 43). Individual soldiers (foot or mounted) are $1.50, horses $2.50 to $2.85 each. The British troops wear the lightweight red coat or long sleeved waistcoat and round hat issued to troops on foreign service in hot countries such as Egypt, West Indies, and India. Napoleonic Peninsular subjects have recently been added to the list of offerings.
