Battle Results

Of the nine French ships captured by the British at the Battle of the Nile, Guerrier, Heureux and Mercure were burned by Nelson on 18 August because they could not be made ready for sailing in time to comply with new admiralty orders.

Peuple Souverain was left at Gibraltar, renamed Guerrier, and used as a guardship. The remaining five French ships noted as "taken" arrived safely in England, and were incorporated into the British Navy.

About 3,000 of the French sailors that survived the battle formed a "Nautical Legion" which served with Napoleon's Army of the Orient for the remainder of the Egyptian campaign.

An interesting postscript about the British ship Bellerophon is that in 1815 when Napoleon surrendered following his defeat at Waterloo, he was transported to England aboard the Bellerophon which had participated in destroying his plans for Egypt seventeen years earlier.
