Keith Rocco's new painting, The Escape, shows one of the most famous incidents of the British Royal Horse Artillery: Ramsay's guns evading an attempt by French cavalry to surround and capture his 5.5-inch hhowitzers during the battle of Fuentes de Onoro on 5 May 1811. The British version of this episode emphasize Ramsay breaking through French cuirassiers (an inaccuracy as cuirassiers were not at the battle) in close quarters. Oman notes that two squadrons of British cavalry actually saved the day. Rocco's view is dramatic and accurately captures the excitement of the moment.
