Book Review

by David Barnes

Review of "Service and Adventure with the Khakee Ressalah; or Meerut Volunteer Horse, During the Mutinies of 1857-58," by Robert Henry Wallace Dunlop, BCS. Potsdam Flags and Publications, 16, Buckminster Close, Derby, DE21 2EA, UK

Published (first) November 1858. This edition November 1997 by Potsdam Flags and Publications ISBN 1900688 60Z. This booklet is in the same format as the uniform information booklets produced by Potsdam, except it has reproduced several of the black and white illustrations - originally engravings, and 3 colour plates covered with a sheet of semitransparent paper, as was the custom of the time when originally produced. There is a preface written by RHWD at Meerut in May 1858. The whole thing is rather like a time capsule. The opinions expressed are reminiscent of the style of Harry Flashman - but written by a genuine person and not a novelist.

There are 49 pages taken up with descriptions by the author of the efforts of his unit and himself to put down the mutiny and save the women and children, various of whom were hacked to death, set on fire, or thrown down wells. My own readings about this period include "Tales of the Indian Mutiny" and various John Masters books and of course, the earliest "Flashman" journals and Kipling naturally.

"Service and Adventure" gives a clear picture of what it must have been like to be a "Pukka Wallah" at the time and we are indebted to Potsdam for presenting us with this cameo period piece. I hope they will do it for other periods interesting to wargamers. The descriptions through the booklet can give rise to a series of scenarios for wargaming. Generally the smallness of the separate actions will recommend themselves to skirmishes using small numbers of figures. I recommend this booklet highly.
