The Hessians

Miniatures

By Ian 'the Duke' Turton

Foundry produce and excellent range of 25mm Prussian Infantry which can double as Hessians. I have six regiments of sausage-eaters (including a composite battalion of Grenadiers) and two Jaeger companies. The quality of casting of these figures is high, which means that they can grace any games table. Unfortunately Foundry stocks are low at the moment given Tin Soldiers decision to go with Old Glory. We await a new supplier in eager anticipation.

Old Glory Prussians are also good, although more variable in quality. Many of their figures are also on the large size which means that they do not look out of place based alongside Foundry figures. Old Glory also supplies cavalry and artillery which means that it is possible to flesh out your Hessians into a full-blown Prussian army from the Seven Years War.

Dixon produces an extensive range of figures suitable for service in the wilderness. Unfortunately, they suffer from the 'round boy-like face' syndrome and being true 25mm figures they are dwarfed by their Foundry and Old Glory friends. Minifigs of course produces an extensive range of figures whilst the range available in plastic has been extended considerably in recent years.

[Revell produce a range of larger sized 20mm plastics for the Seven Years War which include Prussians in Mitres and several others that can be used to represent German AWI troops. Esci also produce a box of Napoleonic Austrian & Prussians with the latter being perfect for bicorned Jaegers in SYW uniforms and, of course, there is the good old Airfix AWI range and those produced by HäT. –Ed.]

One of the beauties of the AWI to the wargamer is that the armies were small and varied in their composition. As a consequence it is possible for a person to purchase an army containing every regiment which participated in a particular campaign. Indeed, most people I know refight the battles of this war on a 1:25 scale using standard WRG rules (with local modifications of course!).
