Seven Years War
15mm Hanoverians by Old Glory

Reviewed by David S. Doty

A new release from Old Glory, these 15mm figures are nicely animated in the Old Glory style. The bag includes musketeers, drummers, officers, standard bearers and grenadiers. As is typical of Old Glory, these are tall 15mm figures and would not mix well with other ranges. This should not be a problem, though, as only Frei Korps currently has 15mm Hanoverians in production.

The uniform details are VERY disappointing. The most glaring faults to be found are: The musketeer and drummers have no pompoms or side bobs; The sword belt for the sword and bayonet is outside the uniform coat.

Part one of the Pengel & Hurt volume on the uniforms of Brunswick Luneburg (Hanover) clearly depicts line infantry, guard infantry and drummers with pompoms and side bobs. The accompanying table specifically defines what they looked like. The Morier drawings depict two Hanoverian infantrymen, one in a route march with sword belt slung over the right shoulder. The other drawing shows the sword belt inside the uniform coat. This depiction is repeated in the Funcken and Mollo illustrations, too.

It is disappointing that the sculptor took such little care to properly research such an important army for this period. It would appear that all he did was "warm over" the previously released French infantry- A solution for those gamers who need to have historically accurate Hanoverian infantry for the Western Theater of the war is to use British officers and standard bearers from Old Glory's British infantry pack. For rank and file, use Old Glory's Austrians. To depict the slash in the cuff, simply paint a line of red where the slash should be. For grenadiers, use the British ones as both armies tucked the hair queue up under their mitre cap.

If you must have Hanoverians that are not cobbled up, though, contact Outland games and get Frei Korps Hanoverians.
