7 Uniforms


Note: The following nine illustrations were taken from the Tradition magazine series by Marrion. The original line drawings were scanned, sized to a standard, enhanced and then computer colorized.

Figure 2. Native Sergeant, East Africa:
Grey felt hat, trimmed with white woolen braid. Black, white, and red cockade on turned up side. Light brown drill jacket and trousers. The jacket piped light blue along bottom of the collar, front and top and rear of the cuff. White metal buttons. Silver rank chevrons on light blue ground. Trousers piped with light blue. Dark grey/blue puttees. Brown Boots. Brown waistbelt with brass plate with white circle. Bayonet scabbard black with white fittings. White, black, and red mixture knot and tassel with white strap.

White helmet with black, silver and red cockade on the front. White coat and trousers piped with cornflower blue. White metal buttons. White, red and black mixture shoulder straps. Officer's pattern sword, carried in a black scabbard. Officer's swordknot of silver worked with black. Silver chevrons on light blue patch. White shoes.

Grey slouch hat trimmed with cornflower blue, Black, white and red cockade. Sand grey jacket. Cornflower blue collar, cuffs, and piping. White lace on collar and cuffs with red 'light' in the centre. Light blue "swallows nests" with white braid on each shoulder. White buttons with Imperial eagle thereon, on the collar. White, black and red braid on each shoulder. White metal buttons. Sand grey breeches piped with cornflower blue. Brown equipment. Brown boots, white metal spurs. Brass trumpet with white, black and red mixture cords and tassels.

Grey felt slouch hat with cornflower blue trimming. German national cockade. Khaki drill jacket trimmed with silver braid. Two large silver buttons with the Imperial eagle thereon on either side. Cuffs braided at the top with a single silver braid. Two hip pockets without buttons. No breast pockets. Single row of white metal buttons with the Imperial crown thereon. Sand grey cord trousers with a cornflower blue piping on the outside seams. Canvas or untanned leather, gaiters fastened by three straps and buckles. Natural leather boots. On the upper right arm the badge of the Fahnentrager, i.e. ground of sand grey, or field grey, with crossed yellow flags, Imperial crown in yellow above and yellow cipher below. White metal gorget and chains. Short straight bladed sword, with gilt officers pattern hilt. Black scabbard with gilt fittings. Senior NCOs sword strap and tassel. Bandolier of red trimmed with silver lace. Natural leather pouches and equipment.

Figure 6. Officer, Kordrock (Cord Litewka):
Grey slouch hat, trimmed with cornflower blue silk. Cornflower blue silk hat band. Black, silver and red cockade. Sand grey jacket with collar of facing color. No piping, grey horn buttons.The "Kordrock" was cut as the home service Litewka, but had breast and side pockets, with flaps but without buttons for fastening the flaps. No lace on the collar. Rank distinctions as worn on the Litewka.

Figure 7. Officer, Khaki Drill Jacket:
The tropical uniform was a yellow/khaki drill. The collar, cuffs and front of the coat were piped with facing color, with six white metal buttons down the front bearing the Imperial German crown. There were also two buttons on each cuff and the two breast pockets were fastened by buttons. Boots of natural leather. White metal spurs.
