15mm Modern African Wars

Peter Pig

Here seems as good a place as any to review Martin Goddard`s new 15mm Peter Pig Modern African Wars (Range 17) figures. So far there are 39 packs including wheeled vehicles, AFV`s and buildings. The figures represent generic types to allow the wargamer maximum flexibility of choice.

The variety of weapons and head-dress allows for almost any campaign from the dark continent between from the 1960`s & beyond, to be played on the wargames table. In fact there are so many possible permutations it`s hard to know where to start. For example, Pack 5 : R (Regular) AK47 Cap, can be painted as black Africans, Cubans or South Africa`s elite 32 Battalion recce company (as whites on patrol 'blacked' up, you can use them for both). Pack 11 : R/P (Regular/Professional) G3/SLR cap, can be the black Rhodesian African Rifles, white / black South Africans or Portuguese !

The figures themselves are slimmer and subtly smaller than previous ranges, perhaps in an answer to those who claimed Peter Pig figures are too large to mix and match with the likes of Old Glory. Al Martin`s offerings these day`s reflect his increasing skill as a designer and are miniature human beings NOT miniature model soldiers. All packs have 8 figures in 3 assorted poses.

Pack 32 The Panhard A/car comes as a separate hull, turret, gun, wheels and turret hatch. Eight pieces in all - almost a kit ! Even dismantled in the packet it is unmistakable for what it is. The whole thing was cast well and had a neat and very strong idea for attaching the wheels. Must get the T-55 to do battle !

My favourite figures are the GPMG gunner in bush hat loping along carrying the gun at the trail from pack 17, P (Professional) LMG`s. Also the soldier firing an AK47 from the hip in pack 5, mentioned above ; he`s got his weight on his back leg, gun pulled tight into belly and well braced, head forward and down over the line of fire - obviously on full automatic ! But what the heck, they`re all my favourites - I wish I`d sent off for them month`s ago.
