HMGS Newsletters

Reviewed by Craig Martelle

During the period I received a number HMGS newsletters , my own South's Rebel Yell, Heart of America's Communique, Midwest's The Phoenix, Great Lakes' The Herald, Midsouth's Dispatch, and East's. The Communique offered a well-written and researched article on Pearl Harbor: A Japanese Strategic and Political Failure. Very interesting reading! There are also a couple of additional gaming related articles and the usual convention calendar. Midsouth's issue was dedicated to WWI air combat and carried a number of articles and game aids in that venue. Midwest's The Phoenix was a little difficult to read because of shrunken print but carried a number of tidbits about happenings of interest to Midwest members. They also offered a couple of historical articles (last missing gunboat on Lake Champlain and 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers). Great Lakes elections are coming up and the majority of their newsletter was spent with bios and such. <>Chris von Fahnestock offered the Battle of Krakov scenario he plans to run at Origins '98. This looks like it will be a huge event with over 300 15mm vehicles on the table at one time with an eye-popping 200 tanks! East's newsletter wrapped up a year's worth of administrivia and picked up a couple of articles from South's Rebel Yell. The last Rebel Yell was a seam-burster at 56 pages! It had 8 pages of color! The primary focus of the issue was for Hurricon after action. It contained reviews of some headliner games run at the show, plus a FIW scenario, Pea Ridge ACW scenario, Confederate States Flag Regulations, South trivia, and much more.
