Swedish Armed Forces 1939-45

Introduction

by Sven-Ake Bengtsson

The Swedish armed forces differed from other forces described in this magazine because they, with few exceptions, never participated in World War II. This article therefore not only describes the organization and equipment of the forces, but also the development that took place during the war.

Sweden, like most other minor countries, had compulsory military service. It was 175 days in the army, 200 in the navy and 210 days in the air force. Before the war, however, not all men were required to undergo this training.
