Pre Columbian, Conquest, and Colonial

By Terry Hooker

Pre-Columbian & Conquest

The Broken Spears; The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico, edited by Miguel Leon-Portilla, pub. Constable and Co. Ltd. London, 1962, 162 pp. 12 line drawings, it's so interesting reading how these conquered people viewed these dramatic events, this has been a book on my wanted list for a good number of years, a useful insight from the other side.

Colonial Period

Mexico under Spain, 1521-1556; Society and the Origins of Nationality, by Peggy K. Liss, pub. University of Chicago Press. 1975, 209 pp., a helpful work which aids the understanding of this period of transition to a Colonial State from Corté's defeat of the Aztecs that would create a separate Mexican identity. Keeping to this early period is The War Of Quito, by Pedro de Cieza de Leon, translated and edited by Sir Clements R. Markham, 1st printed 1913, this edition pub. Kraus Reprint Ltd, Liechtenstein, 1967, 200 pp. I have a Spanish version of this work that I bought 2 years ago from Madrid, so an English copy for somebody who is not that brilliant at Spanish is very helpful indeed.

Guatemala in the Spanish Colonial Period, by Oakah L. Jones, Jr., pub. University of Oklahoma Press, 1994, 307 pp., 18 b/w photographs, 17 maps and plans, two chapters ( 8 & 9 ) make this work of interest and help, they cover the defence of the colony and the road to independence taken, interesting campaigns against the British in this region during the 18th century.

The Audiencia of New Galicia in the 16th Century, by J. H. Parry, pub. Cambridge University Press, London, 1948, 200 pp., 1 folded map, a work that I have seen cited as a source in a number of books, which also covers the history side too.

La Ilustración en América ( Siglo XVIII ), edited by Angeles Eugenio Martínez, pub. Biblioteca Iberoamericana, ANAYA, Madrid, 1988, 127 pp. numerous coloured illustrations, 12 of these have a military nature, Spanish text, a couple of plates that I have not seen before of ships and forts.

Sketchbook 56, Vol. IV, The Spanish Colonial Era Infantry 1739-1781, by Ted Spring, pub. Track of the Wolf Co. Inc. St. Louis, Mo. 1990, 77 pp. a large paperback with line drawings on nearly every page with text in a hand written style print, it appears to be aimed more as a school aid and as an easy wargamers guide, although for me the size of the illustrations and text font could both have been reduced to make a smaller/cheaper version, sorry but I didn't like the art-work either.

Battle of Pensacola; Spain's Final Triumph over Great Britain in the Gulf of Mexico, by N. Orwin Rush, pub. Florida State University, 1966, 152 pp. 25 b/w maps and plans at the rear of the book, I believe this to be one of the books to have on this siege from the American War of Independence, it uses contemporary accounts from both sides, a good reference book on a topic that appears to have grown in interest over the years since this work was first published.
