Summary: A very useful guide to used book stores in the region covered. It was interesting to read the authors' comments on stores the reviewer was familiar with, and exciting to discover several new sources for books on the Napoleonic era and other periods of military history.

This book is part of a series that currently covers New England (Maine Vermont, New Hampshire Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut) for $16.95, the Mid-Atlantic (New York, New Jersey Pennsylvania and Delaware) for$15.95 and Midwest (Illinois, Missouri Kentucky, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia) for $17.95. The next title scheduled for release covers the Pacific Coast (California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii).

Each book in this series is an in depth guide to more than 600 used book dealers in the region presented, grouped by location and category. The Specialty Index helps locate dealers who specialize in a particular area of interest (every book has a "history" heading, but only the New England, Midwest and South Atlantic editions have a separate "Napoleon" heading).

Almost every store is listed with the following information: name (alphabetically within state), map reference number, address, type of collection (such as "general stock," "paperback," etc.), number of volumes in stock, areas of specialty, hours of operation, services available (such as appraisals, mail order, search service, etc.), directions to the store, if they accept credit cards, owner's name, year established, and some interesting comments by the authors based on their visit.

Including the supplemental insert with additions and deletions, there are 688 used book dealers listed in the South Atlantic edition.

If you have any interest in used books, locating that elusive title for your library, or just enjoy browsing, this series is highly recommended. As the reviewer for The New York Times noted: "I was desperate to check out its offerings . . . . And best of all, in almost every case, I hadn't even known that books I found existed."
