The book referred to is LE PHILOSOPHE ANGLAIS OU L'HISTOIRE DE CLEVELAND FILS NATUREL DU CROMWELL by Abbe Prevost d'Exiles, originally published 1732 (Paris & Utrecht) English translations 1734, 1736, 1741. In 1780 there was also a similar 'romance' published in Madrid. Neither have any relation to historical fact.
