These are principally drawn from STATE PAPERS 28, a vast and largely untapped Ms collection of documents concerning the administration of Parliaments Armies 1642-6O, held at the Public Record Office. Many notes were kindly communicated to me by Mrs. E. A. Laurence. Explanations are in brackets. a. 'Pay unto Major May or whom he shall appoint the sum of
£ 39.13s for 366 pairs of stockings and 366 palrs of Brogues for
the use of Col. Henry Grey's regiment'
I know nothing about this unit, but it was not the same as that of Henry Grey, Earl of Stafford) b. 'Paid Mr. Richard Hunt, Milliner, for 1O4 orange scarfes
(i.e. sashes) at 4s 4d a piece'
c. 'Received of Mr. Francis Clerk 4OO coats of green cloth for
Col. Hampden's regiment. Sept. 11 1645 (refers to coats provided
earlier)'
'Pay unto Mr. Richard Downes for 667 cassocks of Venice red
cloth...at nyne shillings per cassook' Feb. 1648.
