London Trained Band Uniforms

Notes #5

Stuart Reid

Readers may be interested in the following : Battle of Newbury, October 27th, 1644. From MERCURIUS AULICUS, p1234.

"200 horses gathered up, with great store of good pillage, Trained band Buffe (for many of these were Londoners)."

as support for the Bands wearing Buff-Coats (only?)-

On the other hand, an account in MERCURIUS RUSTICUS (Cornmarket reprint V4 p188) suggests that at least one of the regiments wore Red Coats:

"Little Issac (pennington) had hardly so much patience as to read out the letter, but he summons his Myrmidons and gives Alarme to his Red-coates, the messengers of his fury, and sends them instantly to plunder Mistresse Urries lodging."

Pennington was Colonel of the White Regiment of the Trained Bands.

Editor's Note Further research by Keith Roberts has recently brought to light further evidence of at least the first 6 London Trained Bands Regiments being in Red coats, also that there were in fact 18 Trained Band units, not 15 as generally supposed. More on the Trained Bands in later issues.
