In addition to their authorized equipment, these units added captured Kuwaiti equipment to their organizations, such as M901 ITVs, which were added to the antitank battalions. 2. Iraqi doctrine called for 14.5mm AAA (ZPU-2 or -4) and 37mm AAA to be allocated at the battalion level, defending the battalion headquarters. 3. Iraqi doctrine called for SA-9 or -13 SAMs to be allocated at the brigade level, along with ZSU-23s. 4. Iraqi doctrine called for SA-6 SAMs to be used at the division level. These were available only in the Republican Guard heavy divisions (armored and mech) and were used doctrinally. Republican Guards Mechanized Infantry Divisions3rd Mechanized Infantry Division "Tawakalna" 5th Mechanized Infantry Division "Baghdad" The Tawakalna Mechanized Division is organized like the armored division above except it has two mechanized infantry brigades and one tank brigade. The Baghdad Mechanized Infantry Division has one mechanized infantry brigade and three motorized infantry brigades, but is otherwise organized like the armored division above. For the organization of its three motorized brigades, see the motorized infantry divisions immediately below. 1 medium ammo truck with trailer Notes 1. These were the most recently formed of the Republican Guard divisions. It has been suggested that one of these (presumably Adrian) was not yet a fully functioning division, but fought as three separate brigades. Although it is true that only one brigade of the Adrian was committed to the fight, anchoring the right (northern) flank of the Medinah Division, it fought quite persistently, and was controlling a division worth of artillery, which does not support the notion of no division structure. However, SA-6 battalions were not available to the Republican Guard infantry divisions, so they were required to use S-60 57mm guns, SA-9/13s, or ZSU-23s at this level. Republican Guard Special Forces Division8th Special Forces Division This unit almost certainly did not function as a maneuver division, but was instead a holding unit for the three RG Special Forces brigades, see under Regular Army Corps units. Republican Guard Corps Artillery BrigadeUse the Regular Army corps artillery brigade on page 32 above, but useM-46 130mm gun, G-5155mm gun-howitizer, and GHN-45155mm gun-howitzer for tube artillery, and ASTROS II for the rocket battalion. Notes for all Iraqi Formations1. The APC can be any of the following, with all APCs in a battalion of the same type: BTR-152, BTR 50, BTR 60, EE-11, OT-62, OT-64, Panhard M3, Walid, Type 63/YW53 1. 2. The reconnaissance vehicle/armored car can be any of the following, with all vehicles in a company of the same type: BRDM-2, AML60, AML-90, EE-3, EE-9, ERC-90, M-60, Panhard M3, PShZ-IV. 3. Iraqi stands use the RPG-7 as the LAW. One stand in each infantry company is armed with the SA-7. 4. The Iraqi Army uses a standard numbering system among its brigades, so that each brigade has a unique number, i.e., there is only one 5th Brigade, and not a 5th Infantry, a 5th Tank, a 5th Artillery etc. The list below shows the "known" breakdowns of selected Iraqi units. This list does not show the only brigades serving with a division, only those brigades with "known" designations. Note that there are at least three Iraqi units identified as the 20th Mech Brigade on the list below (with the 26th ID, 6th AD, and 5th Mech Division). The one with the 26th ID is presumably a mere battalion, misidentified via standard threat inflation as a brigade. In addition, where "known," this list shows the tank, APC, and artillery types used by the identified brigades/divisions (M46 units are presumably corps assets attached to the divartys). 2d Infantry Division 3d and 4th infantry Brigades 7th Infantry Division
