The 1991 Persian Gulf War

Bahrain, Canada, Italy, and Niger

by David Nilsen and Greg Novak

BAHRAIN

A single company of Bahraini infantry served with Joint Forces Command-East (Task Force Othman), and should be rated as Experienced, Morale 8. Bahraini Pilots are rated as Veteran, Morale 10.

Bahrain Infantry Company, with:

    1 command infantry stand
    2 infantry stands
    3 Panhard M3 APCs

CANADA

As befits its nature, Canada was lukewarm to the idea of committing itself to military action in the Gulf, and its aircraft were initially limited to purely defensive missions. However, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney found that as a NATO member and member of the UN Security Council, Canada's early support of Desert Shield had earned it credibility when negotiating with the US about Gulf policy, and argued that Canada should support the Coalition UN mandate of using force to expel Iraq after the January 15 deadline. The Liberal and New Democrat parties challenged this position on January 15, using the French-style argument that Canada was merely toeing the US line, and a five-day debate ensued.

By the time the debate was over, however, the war was five days old, and public opinion had come to overwhelmingly support the Coalition war. The Liberals and New Democrats found it prudent to follow public opinion, and the motion to support the Coalition offensive passed by a wide margin.

Canadian pilots should be rated as Veteran, Morale 10.

ITALY

Italian Pilots should be rated as Veteran, Morale 10.

NIGER

Very little is known about the Niger Infantry battalion. Like many of the other minor Coalition partners, it presumably remained in reserve during the liberation of Kuwait. Along with the Moroccan and Senegalese units, it was said to have comprised the African Brigade at some point, although all three of these units were task organized with other forces by the time of the ground war. The Niger Battalion was a light force, and the organization below is notional. Treat the troops as Regular, Morale 8.

    Niger Infantry Battalion, with:

    Battalion Headquarters, with:

      1 command stand
      1 jeep
      1 recon ERC 60-20

    3 Infantry Companies, with:

      1 command infantry stand
      2 infantry stands
      3 Panhard M3 APCs
1 jeep with 106mm recoilless rifle
