Napoleon in Egypt

A Skirmish Scenario

by Jim Birdseye

Skirmish battles, there were numerous small actions during the French Occupation of the Nile. I suggest an action between one officer with six French enlisted men and one Mameluke and twelve of his retainers. The French have occupied a village and set up a headquarters, The Mameluke and his retainers plan to attack the French and seize their weapons. See the suggested map of the village.

FRENCH
Officer elite Two pistols and sword
Sergeant veteran Pistol/musket/bayonet
Private veteran Musket/bayonet
Private veteran Musket/bayonet
Private elite Musket/bayonet

MAMELUKE
Noble elite Sword/dagger/pistol
Fellahin raw Dagger/spear
Fellahin veteran Jazzel/knife
Fellahin raw Knife
Fellahin raw Spear
Fellahin average Knife
Fellahin raw Spear
Fellahin average Jazzel
Janissary veteran Musket/sword
Fellahin raw Unarmed
Fellahin raw Unarmed/shield
Fellahin raw Knife/spear/shield
Fellahin veteran Sword

The French should be armed and ready due to the behavior of the local population which has tipped the hand of the Mameluke player. The French player should set up first and the Mameluke player can place his men just out of sight of the French units. Play starts when the Mameluke player moves a unit into sight of the French.

Another option is to have the French fight their way to a boat on the Nile River. You may consider group morale factor forthe Mameluke side, i.e., if the Mameluke figure is eliminated the group rolls for morale; it should either enhance or hinder the performance of the raw troops.
