This year's Little Wars, April 29, 30,and May 1, was held at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, courtesy of the Parkside Association Wargamers (PAW). The HMGS event had over 100 miniatures games covering all periods. Approximately 700 gamers attended with most participating all three days. There were 20 dealers covering all aspects of the hobby. As isthe Little Wars tradition, winners of events receive a custom Little Wars "Legion of Honor" medal. These were done by our friend John Cassaza of Mislet in New Jersey. A "Best Looking Game of the Convention" competition is held each year. First Place was won by Steve Jamison for his Chinese Legation Game. This game featured scratch-built buildings representing the Embassies of the foreign powers under siege during the Boxer Rebellion. Second Place was won by Hal Thinglum, for his Herculean effort in putting on his Sudan game. This game featured over 3500 figures, and included two scratch built boats. Hal was able to juggle things so that 20 players could participate; no small effort in my book. Third place prize went to Rick White for his 25mm Samurai game. This game featured a stylish combination of terrain and figures. He also had, as near as I could tell, two custom made bridges. Other awards given were: "Best Terrain" won by Curt Sabo; and "Best Painted Figures on the Field", won by Tom Tuck. A 15mm 7th Edition Ancient tournament was held underthe auspices of N.A.S.A.M.W. with the Presient, and Courier Ancient Editor, Kruse Smith, presiding. This tournament was considerably larger than in the past, yet seemed to run smoother than any Ancient tournament I can recall. The tournament was won by Bob Puyler playing an Ancient Spanish army. As Little Wars champion, he will participate in the North American Championship held this year at Gen-Con/Origins. Second place was Erik Jacobson, playing Late Roman, The Best Sport Award went to John Brust. Among other highlights was a seminar run by Howard Whitehouse on Colonial gaming. This appeared to be a cross between historical and role playing. Whatever it was, all seemed to have a good time. The HMGS-Midwest held a meetingand elected officers. Theyare: Harold Johnson, President; Bob Bigalow, V.P.;Todd Fisher, Treasurer; Nick Klapper, Recording Secretary. These will be the officers that will preside over the HMGS participation in Gen-Con/Origins '88. More Courier Dispatch News About the Hobby.
