DUTCHRogers shows 27 battalions and 45 squadrons of this; I can account for all but 4 battalions. Rogers shows an average strength of 153. In the chart, the question marks indicate a lack of information (obviously), as some regiments had lapels and collars and others did not. Uniform coat was in general similar to British. Blue is a middle blue, belts are usually white. Most lace in button color, shabraque in facing color. Officers may have worn a sash over shoulder like British officers, probably orange. Most Dutch infantry wore coats of a middle to dark blue, of a large cut, rather like contemporary French or Russian cuts. Grenadier caps came in a wide variety - British, Prussian, Austrian, etc. Waistcoat and breeches were same color, but Swiss regiments were always blue. Belts were white or buff; hat lace in button color. Officers seem to have worn a sash over their right shoulder, a la British style, with black cockade. Strengths were usually 1 battalion, 800 full strength, 650 average at Fontenoy. Foreign regiments had 2 or 3 battalions. As for the remaining four battalions, they could perhaps be converted grenadier battalions. For wargaming purposes, however, there are a few units with which one could bulk out his army. These are chosen because of their difference from the blue-faced-red norm.
AUSTRIANSThe two Austrian cavalry regiments that I can identify fought with the Dutch. There were two squadrons of de Ligne Dragoons (No. 14) actually commanded by Colonel Peter Joseph de Coudrelier. They wore a medium green coat with red lapels, vest, left shoulder strap and right shoulder cord. There were yellow buttons, black neck stock and buff pants; also, red horse housings edged yellow. The hussars belonged to the Karolyi Hussars actually commanded by Colonel Geo. von lklad. They had an all dark blue uniform with red trim, sash and bag. Kalpak and fur were brown. Shabraque was red edged dark blue.
