American Civil War Society Wargamers Forming Group The American Civil Wargaming Society has announced its formation. The organization was founded by Civil War historians from around the country, including officials of several National Battlefield Parks and authors of several noted books. The ACW Society has dedicated itself to furthering wargaming in the Civil War period. They will not affiliate with any rules set, instead preferring to allow members their choice as to which rules they prefer. Their role, as they see it, is to help ACW gamers get in touch with other members in their area, assist in setting up large scale scenarios at conventions, promote and publicize events such as tournaments, and to give information helpful to members in their publication, "THE ZOUAVE". "THE ZOUAVE" (6 issues per year) will contain articles of interest to ACW gamers and historians. Features will include a column for our members to ask questions about different rules sets, answers being written by the authors of such rule books. It will also include well researched orders of battle and terrain maps to help you set up scenarios, news of miniatures, buildings, etc. which become available around the world for the Civil War gamer, historical research about various units, battles and campaigns, along with uniform and flag information to assist members in painting their regiments. How many times have you wanted to know what the uniforms of some of the more unusual units looked like? You'll find the answers in many cases in "THE ZOUAVE"! Some exotic features which can be found in "THE ZOUAVE" are previously unpublished photographs of generals, officers and enlisted men, and the publishing (at member's request) of the names of the commanding officers of ANY Confederate regiment! There will be excerpts from soldiers' diaries about certain battles, and advertisements which allow members to purchase authentic photographs and letters from the Civil War at very reasonable prices. "THE ZOUAVE" will also carry ads free of charge for charter members in which they can buy or sell ACW items (non-commercial members only). The unpublished photographs in combination with articles about some of the more obscure ACW engagements assures that "THE ZOUAVE" is certain to be an invaluable reference source. Charter membership for North America costs $12.00 ($16.00 overseas), covering the remainder of 1986 and all of 1987. Charter members are guaranteed an annual membership fee of $10.00 per year through 1989 regardlessof whether later fees are raised. Crain's Chicago Business Magazine Article on Historical Wargaming The July issue of Crain's Chicago Business magazine, a publication reaching over-75,000 Leaders, featured an introductory article on historical wargaming with miniatures which included interviews with Richard Bryant of THE COURIER and LITTLE WARS organizer, Todd Fisher amongst others. The article traced the history of the hobby, the distinctions between it and boardgaining/fantasy; discussed different rationales for becoming involved, and in general, gave a positive overview of wargaming. Origins '88 To Be Held in Midwest ORIGINS, considered to be the nation's largest gaming convention, recently awarded its 1988 show to the midwest after considering bids from Boston and Los Angeles. TSR and the HISTORICAL MINIATURES GAMING SOCIETY-MIDWIST (HMGS-MIDWEST) presented a proposal in which TSR would conduct a joint GenCon-Origins convention. Historical Miniatures Return to GenCon Following a several year absense, GEN-CON 19 held August 14-17 1986 in Milwaukee, Wis again offered historical miniatures wargaming to its attendees. A last minute offer by HISTORICAL MINIATURES GAMING, SOCIFTY-MIDWEST (HMGS-MIDWEST) to coordinate the miniatures events at the Midwest's oldest convention resulted in over forty games being available at the predominantly fantasy gathering. Todd Fisher of HMGS-Midwest reported that over three hundred gamers participated in miniatures events and HMGS-Midwest agreed to again conduct historical events at the 1987 Gen-Con Convention. GDW Purchases Rights to Johnny Reb and Harpoon Game Designers' Workshop (GDW), one of the leading boardgame producing companies in the country, recently obtained the rights to the popular miniatures rules by John Hill, JOHNNY REB as well as HARPOON II from Adventure Games. GDW President, Frank Chadwick, in an interview in the July-August issue of the MIDWEST WARGAMER'S ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER (MWAN) stated that GDW is returning to the miniatures rules publishing business because "the miniatures market has grown sufficiently to allow GDW to make a fairly big commitment to it" and that they will also be releasing a new set of WWII rules, COMMAND DECISION, which they have been working on for five years.
