A fat issue for the 50th edition (November). Many interesting and entertaining articles including a solo ancients battle (Magyars vs. Vikings) played on an A4 sheet of millimeter graph paper. You simply reduce the scale, draw the appropriate units with the correct frontage and depth, calculate movement (you have to re-draw the unit's position each turn) and resolve fire, morale and melee in the usual fashion. Imagine the screams from the figure manufacturers if that caught on! Other articles give solo scenarios for WW 11 infantry combat, Northern convoy naval and a solo system for ACW. There is also a lively letters to the editor forum and a useful article on Wargame Modelling which gives details of building simple but acceptable-looking 20mm game pieces. The river gunboat (Colonial period) in particular seems very effective. Lone Warrior also has a several page play-by-mail section for those interested in such things. The magazine is not just for solo wargamers having many features of general interest. With the state of the pound sterling these days, this may be a good time to subscribe to some magazine from over the waters. Military Modelling (Published monthly, $31.50 for 12 issues) U.S. subscription agent, Joseph Dailecla, 4314 W 238th St., Torrance, CA 90505. The November issue concludes the "Falklands Memorandum" which has been an extremely detailed account of the Falklands War. Also of interest to gamers is an article on choosing scales by C.S. Grant. This issue also contains articles on Napoleon's Army of Italy colours, photographing models, packaging and carrying wargame figures, and a couple of military features. As always, one of MM's strong points are the colour plates, drawings and photographs. That and the wealth of information on new releases in figures, books and paraphanalia make this one of the best magazines on the market. Hopefully, the advent, and early success of Miniature Wargames will prompt MM to carry more wargame-related material. Savage and Soldier (Published Quarterly, $10.00 for 4 issues) Lynn Bodin, 14219 NE 74th St., Redmond, WA 98052. The first issue in a while, the April-June edition contains a lengthy article on the Mariposa Wars (1850-52, Yosemite valley), an article on the U.S. in the Phillipines (1898) complete with line drawings showing uniform details, and a review column on things colonial. Of interest to gamers is the announcement of a range of Savage and Soldier miniatures. This 25mm range is intended to complement existing lines of colonial period figures. The intent is to produce special figures that are not provided elsewhere. For a sample pack send $5.00 to Lynn Bodin at the above address. Send an SSAE for a list only. The Midwest Wargamers Association Newsletter (Published bi-monthly, $5.00 for 6 issues) Hal Thinglum, 3533 W. 218th St., Matteson, IL 60443. An interesting newsletter that caters exclusively to miniature gamers. The November/December issue contains several rules-related articles, a description of a tour of Gettysburg, Antietam and Shenandoah Valley battlefield, a "how-to" on ordering figures from overseas and much news and information on wargaming in the midwest. It's a nicely produced publication and good value for money too. The Southwest Society of Ancients Newsletter (Published bi-monthly, $7.00 for annual membership in the society) F. Askew,1200W. 40th St., No. 225, Austin, TX 78756. Another regional newsletter, this one devoted to the ancient period. Information on conventions and tournaments in the Southwest area as well as battle reports and much discussion of the WRG 6th edition rules. More News
