Wargames in Italy

THE COURIER recently received the following letter from Luigi Casali giving some information on the organization of wargame clubs in Italy It is obvious from the letter that there is a degree of interaction and communication between clubs in Italy that does not exist here in the U.S. (despite various attempts to promote it.)

"In Italy there are 25 wargame clubs or associations totaling about 500 members. Rather obviously the most popular periods are the Napoleonic Wars (25mm), using Bruce Quarrie or local house rules, and the Ancient Period using WRG 6th edition. Other popular periods are the Middle Ages (1200-1300), the American Civil War, World War II (1:300 scale) and Ultra-Modern (1:300 scale).

In 1978 the Italian clubs founded the Italian Wargame League. The task of the League is to spread wargaming in Italy and to organize conventions and national championships. There have been four National Championships since the League was organized. In 1981 the winners were; 25mm Napoleonics (Bruce Quarrie rules as amended) - Club Naples, 25mm Ancients (WRG 6th edition) - Club Pavia, and WWII (WRG)- Club L'Aquila. The League is interested in contacting clubs and players in other countries to exchange information on the subject of wargaming. Contact (in English, French or Spanish) Luigi Casali, Presidente Lega Italiana Wargame, Viale Sardegna No. 26, 27100 Pavia PV, Italy."
