GORGET AND SASH is a new quarterly publication edited by Curt Johnson. According to the opening editorial it will deal with "what we call the Early Modern Period, including the Rennaissance, the Thirty Years' War, the English Civil War, the Wars of Louis XIV, Charles Xll, and Marlborough, the Age of Frederick the Great, and the American Revolutionary War . . ." This choice of periods is interestiny because it combines two eras not generally regarded as closely related: the "Pike and Shot" (sometimes curiously referred to as "Renaissance" though how that relates to the ECW isn't clear), and the "pre- Napoleonic" 18th Century. In the manner of The Society of Ancients you don't simply subscribe, you join the "Early Modern War Society" and are invited to participate in their championship competition. G & S is full of fascinating material. All of the articles in the premier issue pertain to the 1500 -1650 period, which contains a good deal of relatively little known territory There is a fair amount of hard information, such as diagrams of 17th century French battle flags, as well as readable articles on such diverse topics as Turkish field music, tactics of the Italian Wars, and how to build your own Gulay Gorod. Those interested in the 16th century know how hard it is to find information on the period; those who believe that military historY was asleep between Agincourt and Breitenfeld will be pleasantly surprised.
