Reviewing Stand

Ace of Aces (WWI game)

by Dick Bryant

This is a difficult review as I stayed up all last night playing the game! You may ask "what is a review of a game that requires only two booklets and no miniatures doing in THE COURIER?" It belongs here as it is more like miniatures than like boardgames because it is so visual.

The two booklets one for the German WW I fighter (Fokker DR-1) and one for the Allied Sopwith Camel, each contain 223 drawings showing the view of the enemy fighter as seen from your cockpit. Along the bottom of each drawing are a series of maneuvers. Each player calls out a maneuver and then goes to the page indicated by his enemy.

A second call out of page numbers and both arrive at the new view of the enemy as a result of both maneuvers! The effect is very much as if you were sitting in the plane and flying it! There are basic, intermediate and advanced rules that incorporate relative altitude and where you are damaged.

Additional booklets will soon be out for the faster WW I and later aircraft. I can't get over how your heart skips a beat as you turn to page 16 to see the enemy shoot your tail off! $13.95 from Gameshop Inc., 46 Dougherty Street, Manchester, CT 06040. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
