Osprey: Leipzig 1813

Book Review

by Bruce Weeks

THE CAMPAIGN OF LEIPZIG, 1813: The second of the series covers the major actions of 1813: Lutzen, Bautzen, Dresden, Dennewitz, and Leipzig, along with major strategic moves between the battles. Jeff Parker delivers the text with Peter Gilder supplying the color photos of wargaming figures.

Unlike the first of the series, this booklet is geared to very large battles, a difficult thing for wargamers to convert to the table. Unfortunately, this publication does not devote a section to the possible areas which a wargamer can use to set up campaigns and battles on the table. Having been excited by the ideas in Number 1, we were disappointed to find them missing in Number 2. Knowing that editor of the series, Terence Wise, is a wargamer does give us high hopes for future items.

THE CAMPAIGN OF NASEBY, 1645: This newly introduced series from Osprey promises "An occasional series of concise studies of great campaigns, selected from the whole sweep of military history, written and illustrated by wargamers, for wargamers." and this title written by Stuart Asquith and colorfully arranged by Peter Gilder provides wargamers with an excellent study of a major English Civil War battle and the campaign leading up to it.

The maps are the type a wargamer needs to help convert an action to the table top. But the greatest appeal, even greater than the magnificent color pictures of well painted figures, is the last several pages being specifically aimed at helping the wargamer set up the campaign, the sedge at Leicester prior to the battle, and the battle itself. There is no doubt that this is a booklet "for wargamers".
