The Battle of Leipzig Recreated

Special Instructions
to the French Commander

by Bruce Weeks

SITUATION: The Emperor has entrusted to you the defense of the southern flank of the battle. You will have the 11 Corps (Victor) and the V Corps (Lauriston) and the Cavalry Division of Sokolnicki to which have already been attached the light cavalry of the two Corps. You will choose a good defensive position south of Leipzig and will have your troops in position not later than 0400 hrs., on the 16th. Each Corps has been reinforced with a company of sappeurs but they will not be available before you arrive in your position. Any further reinforcements must be requested through the Emperor's Chief of Staff.

Your artillery train and Corps will move to Lindenau where they will replenish their supplies for a great battle lasting two or three days.

EXECUTION: 80 Points are allowed from which to pick your troops. You must organize into two Corps plus a small reserve (if desired by you) and a Cavalry Division. You require, therefore, three subcommanders to control these units. You may personally command any unit(s) you desire except that you can not be one of the Corps commanders. Your artillery strength is limited to eight batteries whose weight will be decided by the umpire when you present your order of battle.

On the situation map (map A), you must show each Corps' defense area and the Divisional boundaries between them. Also, the nature and strength of any outpost line must be shown. You must submit a written estimate of the situation and a general order of battle to the umpire not later than 72 furs. prior to the game. At that time, you will receive intelligence about the enemy and will be shown the general area of the map that will be reproduced on the battle board.

TERRAIN: The Pleisse River is unfordable throughout its length. All the villages are stone/stucco and stoutly constructed. The Galgenberg is too steep for all cavalry save scouts to operate on.
