Venexia Miniatures

15mm Old Testament Warriors

by John Boehm

ED NOTE: I do not like the kind of photograph show above to depict figures being reviewed. I rather the setup that we usually use. However Venexia did not send two copies(one for the photographer and one for the reviewer). Having asked Venexia for a photo, the above is what they sent me. As we have so few new figures to review, I decided to present this review anyway - BUT it will be the last time.

Venexia Miniatures is an Italian company. Their web site is http://go.to/venexiaminiatures. They are marketed through Historical Collectibles Associates, David A. Clayton, PO Box 574, Kennesaw, GA 30144. This range consists of Israelites and Philistines with 19 different listings including Israelite heavy and light chariots, as well as Israelites in Egyptian light chariots, Israelite slingers and archers, Philistine chariots and various Philistines infantrymen. The Israelite foot include heavy and medium/light infantry, archers and slingers, as well as command. The Philistine infantry consist of heavy sword and spearmen, light sword and spearmen/javelinmen, and archers, as well as command.

The figures provided for review included an Israelite chariot. This is a four piece model consisting of the body of the chariot, two wheels and the upper frame work. It fits together quite easily. It comes with two horses and two crew figures in different poses. Both crew have helmets and one has amour. There is also a separate round shield, a spear and a sickle sword. The Philistines provided for review consisted of four different poses of advancing figures with spear, two armored and two without, and an unarmored archer. All have the characteristic Philistine head gear. Included were two round shields, a rectangular shield, a battle ax, a dagger sword and three different spears. One figure has the spear and shield cast on. The other weapons and shields are separate. The figures are cleanly cast, and animated with reasonable detail. They are 17 M on the Barrett scale. The chariot horses appear a little short in the body, but otherwise are interestingly posed. The manufacturer suggests that Israelites can also be used for Aramaeans and the Philistines for Sea Peoples such as Lukka and Peleset. Infantry come eight figures to a pack for 2.90 Euros, with infantry command packs consisting of six figures. Light chariots with two horses and two or three crew are also 2.90 Euros, and heavy chariots with four horses and three to four crew are 5 Euros. (Sony, prices were only listed in Euros.) The range will be expanded to include Assyrians, Egyptians, Myceneans and others.
