MWAN CHANGES OWNERS

Hal Thinglum has been editing MWAN for over 20 years and recently retired from his work as a speech therapist. Not willing to stop there, he decided to retire from the editorship of MWAN as well, effective with MWAN #128. The new owner and editor will be Don Perrin, author, miniature manufacturer and book publisher, will take over the editorial reins with the March/April 2004 (128) Issue. For those worried that Hal will no longer be a part, Hal has agreed to carry on his editorial as a column for the foreseeable future. According to Don Perrin, the new editor: “Our intent is to carry on making MWAN Magazine with lots of content and a care-free, newsletter style. Many describe getting MWAN Magazine as getting a letter from a friend. We certainly don’t want to change that!”

MWAN Magazine now has a web page to contact them. Go to www.MWAN-Magazine.Com. There’s no intention of making it a web-zine, but it makes it simple to subscribe or contact them. http://www.mwan-magazine.com info@mwan-magazine.com

NEW JOHNNY REB NEWSLETTER

The Johnny Reb Gaming Society is pleased to announce that the first edition of its new CHARGE! newsletter will be printed on November 15th and mailed shortly thereafter. The society exists to promote the use of the popular Johnny Reb miniature wargaming ruleset, and to provide a written forum for the exchange of wargaming scenarios, specialized Civil War history, and general gaming tips. This first issue of CHARGE! will feature 3 regimental-level Civil War miniatures scenarios. These will be Jackson’s attack at Kernstown (First Winchester), A.P. Hill’s attack at Shepherdstown to complete the Maryland Campaign, and the fight between Buford’s cavalry and Lane’s Tarheels along the Fairfield Road at Gettysburg. Informational articles in Issue #1 include Brent Noseworthy’s look at the effectiveness of the rifled musket during the Civil War and J. D. Petruzzi’s analysis of Buford’s defense in depth at Gettysburg. In addition, CHARGE! will feature a Gettysburg trivia contest with prizes donated by GFI - Minifigs US and by Gettysburg - York Gamers.

The newsletter is published quarterly and is included with the annual membership dues ($10 in the USA, $12 in Canada, $15 for overseas and South America). The society encourages anyone interesting in miniature wargaming of the Civil War period to join them. Playing Johnny Reb is not a prerequisite as the scenarios and information will be generic enough to be used in nearly all regimental-level gaming rulesets. For more information, please contact Scott Mingus at jrgsnl@aol.com

Charge, is a new publication devoted to promoting the use of Johnny Reb rules. This first issue is 20 pages, comb-bound with desktop publishing color on many pages. There are scenarios ( Shepardstown, Kernstown, and Fairfield Road at Gettysburg), an article by Brent Nosworthy on typical firefight ranges and effectiveness of rifled muskets, a piece on fence lines and how they affect game play, a brief history of Buford’s cavalry action at Gettysburg, and a list of frequently overlooked rules from JR3. Johnny Reb Gaming Society, 1383 Sterling Dr, York, PA 17404. $10 / 4 issues, membership.

Gettysburg ‘04

Fred Hubig has announced Gettysburg ‘04 sponsored by The Army Heritage Center Foundation and The Georgetown Center for Living History to be held at the Army War College in Carlisle, PA. on September 9 - 12, 2004. We are presenting the entire Battle of Gettysburg in Miniature with about 4,000 25mm figures and beautifully crafted terrain created by Joe Brimer, of the Battle Barn, in Williamsburg. Approximately 100 wargamers will participate and several nationally known guest speakers will provide the historical punch. The event will be held in The Comfort Suites Carlisle, a modern, full service hotel in historic downtown Carlisle.

We received a great response from The Army Heritage Center Foundation to do an annual commemoration of the Civil War and this will be the first chapter. Contact Fred Hubig at frdhubig@concentric.net

Aberdeen Ordnance Museum Needs Help

From The Miniatures Page http://theminiaturespage.com/

The US Army Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland is raising money for 10 buildings to house and restore the collection of armor vehicles.

The collection has been suffering outside for over 30 years and shows it. There are about 12 vehicles that have been restored and painted with correct colors and markings (a H35 French Tank is wonderful, along with a German Mk III).

They want to do this for all the vehicles in the collection and house them inside like the GREAT Bovington Museum in England.

The cost is 3 million dollars. Here’s the site information if anyone would like to help out. www.ordmusfound.org ordmusfound@erols.com. (401) 272-3622 or FAX (401) 278-7473

Eagle Games and Shrapnel Games Join Forces

What happens when you combine the games you’ve always dreamed of with the art of wargaming? The best damn thing to happen to the strategy market since the CRT. You also get a joint marketing venture partnership between two of the industry’s premiere companies: Eagle Games (http://www.eaglegames.net) of Illinois and Shrapnel Games (http://www.shrapnelgames.com) of North Carolina.

Besides sounding like something you’d find in a Dilbert strip, what exactly is this joint marketing venture partnership? Essentially Eagle Games and Shrapnel Games are joining forces to sell, distribute, and market their products. Consumers will be able to purchase Eagle Games via Shrapnel Game’s online store, The Gamer’s Front. Both companies will also include their partner’s product information in their games. Shrapnel Games will also handle distribution of Eagle Games to the retail sector via the newly formed arm of Shrapnel Games, Shrapnel Games Distributing.

Shrapnel Games Distributing will service game and hobby shops worldwide, specifically the “mom and pop” stores rather than the large, megastores like Wal-Mart or CompUSA. The distribution arm of Shrapnel Games is currently concentrating their efforts on the distribution of Eagle and Shrapnel products, however, Shrapnel Games is very eager to add new partners with quality strategy and conflict products.
