HMGS at Origins Pete Panzeri reports a successful foray of the HMGS Origins Team to the 1999 Origins convention, running historical games from Thursday morning to Sunday evening. Game masters from HMGS chapters all over the country put on the kinds of games we've come to expect at Historican in a venue where they were a distinct minority, and managed to attract some cross-over gamers to 120 scheduled and 40 unscheduled historical events. According to Origin's preliminary data, they increased the percentage of gamers playing historical games by 20% over last year, and doubled the percentage of two years ago. The team was allowed to run several historical games in the main exhibition area, several more in the Space room, and there was ample table space in the Historical room for multi-table games. There was a two-page color HOT '99 spread in the PEL, two more pages in the front of the on-site program with contact info for all HMGS chapters, six demo tables in the hallway and dealer area, (including a 10 x 30 ft Anzio Command Decision campaign and the now well-known Alamo), and an HMGS registration table. HMGS staff and game masters got an access badge and a free Historical gaming ribbon. As Pete puts it, "All in all, HOT'99 provided quality gaming for HMGS attendees, successful recruiting from the boardgamers, War-College, or alt.gamer attendees, and extensive international exposure for HMGS. Next year Origins will promote HOT'99 to their most visible location, right next to their registration, exhibition hall and vendor entrance, and also directly adjacent to the massive Magic crowds."
