Turkey: colors and markings
by Bill Rutherford
Colors Fokker monoplanes (22 were sold to Turkey, 13 of which are known to have been used) were left in their original colors (clear-doped) or were repainted in red-brown, medium green, or medium gray. Examination of surviving black-and-white photos, such as the one of Hans Joachim Buddecke and his E.III, on page 27 of Grosz' datafile on the E.III, show the color to be dark, but which of the three colors was actually used, and the color's specific shade, is unknown. Struts appear to have remained in their original color. Halberstadt biplanes may also have been left in their original light gray/white or also have been repainted. Markings Initially, Fokker monoplanes received in German markings with cross patées in eight positions with white backgrounds simply had the cross's edges connected and filled in, making solid black squares on white backgrounds. Later in the war, the squares' color was changed to red (specific tint unknown). The original German serial numbers appear to have been painted over on those aircraft that were repainted.
