Belgium: colors and markings
by Bill Rutherford
Colors The Belgian air service was equipped mainly with French aircraft and, beyond applying Belgian markings to them, generally left them in the finish in which they were received. For example, Belgian Hanroit HD1s received from France in aluminum-doped finish served under Belgian colors in that finish. When HD1s started arriving in the new French five-color camouflage scheme, that's how they served in Belgian markings. Markings The Belgian roundel (once again, illustration A), which appeared in the standard six positions, was similar to the British and French roundels, but had a black center, yellow inner ring, and red outer ring. Rudders carried tricolor black-yellow-red vertical stripes, with black in front and red on the rudder's trailing edge. Aircraft serial numbers were applied, French fashion, on the rudder in white. Unit and personal markings, again like the French, were common and applied to the fuselage sides. More WWI Air Wargaming
