Historicon '97

By Scott Holder

Any Historicon in which we have over 200 individuals filling up the tournament slots is an outstanding convention. This time, we had 208 in the four sessions (7ed, DBM, DBA, Armati). That breaks down to 55 in 7ed, 80 in DBM, 40 in DBA, and 33 in Armati. About 40% of all players at least doubled up on events and about a third tripled up on games. Plus we crammed in some games late Saturday night so we could complete a tourney and let people catch early flights on Sunday.

Those who made any finals on Sunday were a dead lot. Aaaahhhhhh! Attendence in the 25mm events was also good. The 7ed NICT had 22 players, all in 25mm while DBM is finally hitting its stride with 14 singles players and 8 teams.

We had the usual familiar faces from England and one famous face, that being of Phil Barker. Phil was the Guest of Honor at Historicon and the recipient of the Scruby Award. I deliberately didn't plan anything for him and hope I didn't give the appearance of abandoning the man. But, he had a good time, got to wander around, and gave DBM rulings. Plus, the DBMers got to pick his brain about the next iteration of the game.

Sponsors included Pass of the North, Ral Partha, Thistle and Rose, Blood Axe, Regal Miniatunes, Pharoah's Arms, Simtac and Wargames.
