The HMGS East Legion Of Honor elected Charles Sweet to their ranks and named him Commandant in recognition of his long years of service to the hobby. Though active in gaming since 1918, he first began contributing to the growth of the hobby in the mid 1950s with many, then novel, ideas published in Jack Scrubys War Game Digest. Charlies major contribution came in 1965 when an article about his wargaming activities was published in Sports Illustrated Magazine. Sports Illustrated was attracted to Charlie while doing a feature on former college football players. Charlie was an a star football player at Washington And Lee University and, at the time of the story, a Bank President in Bristol CT. In any case the article led to TV features with Mike Wallace and Walter Cronkite. This brought wargaming out of the closet and many of todays OLD GUARD were inspired or reinforced by the publicity accorded a respectable bank president who openly played with toy soldiers. Charlie went on to be a pioneer member of THE SOCIETY OF ANCIENTS and was a fixture of the WELLESIAN SOCIETY over the years. Congratulations Charlie (details excerpted from a biography by Pat Condray written for the presentation - ED). More Dispatch
