The first issue, apparently written entirely by Dr. Frank Heffner, includes a treatment of Waterloo, modestly subtitled "A Thrilling New Standard for Campaign Analysis," and written in the persona of Napoleon, two map exercise scenarios with solutions to be published next issue, 14 pages of book reviews and not-recommended reading that dismiss von Clausewitz, Jomini, Yorck, Chandler, Griffith, Keegan, Rothenberg, Nofi, and Hamilton-Williams as not useful for learning the art of war. There are many pages of polemics as well. This journal has received favorable review elsewhere, but I found it arrogant, dismissive, and marked by a distinctive sneering verbosity attempting to substitute for coherent argument. Worst of all, I found it boring. The single issue cover price is $7.95; have a look for yourself. 66 pp, $55/12 issues. PO Box 337, Sergeant Bluff, IA 51054. Dragomen is a newsletter devoted to the Ottoman Empire in the Age of Napoleon, edited by William Johnson, author of "the Crescent among the Eagles." The initial issue has articles on Gazi Hasan Pasha Jezayirli, builder and commander of the Ottoman navy, a description of some of Napoleon's dealings with the Greeks, an account of the Yamaks, reserves to the Janissaries, and requests for information. 8 pp, $4/4 issues. 1524 S. 10th St, Ocean Springs, MS 39564. The Piquet Dispatch is a house newsletter dealing with the card-driven miniatures game of the same name. The first issue includes a new card, playing hints, a solitatire method, and painting tips. 8 pp, $14/4 issues. Piquet Inc, 165 Charles St, Vestal, NY 13850. The Age of Napoleon from Partizan Press features, along with the staple notes and queries, articles on Napoleon's 1815 march to Paris, the battle of Wurzburg, de Rolls' regiment, the French invasion of Portugal, hunting in the Peninsula, the making of the Sharpe TV series, an examination of shell fire, reviews, and letters, with lots of photographs and illustrations. 40 pp, $42/6 issues.
