Stirling Publishing Books

War of Roses, Convoy Protection,
Samurai, ACW Prisoner Escapes

By R. Bryant

The Wars of the Roses

Written by Robin Neillands and published by Sterling Publishing Co., Inc; 387 Park Avenue South, NY NY 10016 $29.95. This 256 page book gave me new insights to the war read like a novel. Medieval gamers should certainly not be without it for background on the period. The battle descriptions and maps are sparse, however. One note when I was reading this in the company cafeteria, several people came up to tell me they had enjoyed the movie! When I tried to explain, none new about the historical war on which the movie title was based. We Americans must improve our teaching of history in the lower grades.

Convoy Protection

Sterling continues to publish an enormous amount of books of interest to historical gamers. This one by Paul Kemp covers the anti-submarine and anti-Q ship campaigns in WWI and WWII. Many an interesting scenario here for naval gamers. 124 pages and dozens of interesting B & W photos, $24.95.

Samurai

By Harry Cook and published, once more, by Sterling publishing Co. 144 pages all with color illustrations plus 130 B & W illustrations. Emphasis on the political and social history of the Samurai, but illustrations should help figure painters. $24.95

Civil War Prisoners and Escapes

One more Sterling Publishing effort, written by Robert E. Denny, it sells for $24.95. This is a series of personal accounts of their prisoner-of-war experiences and escapes by the Civil War veterans who experienced them. This certainly brings home what Andersonville and Libby prisons were like. Stalin may have taken them as an example for his Gulags. The escapes and escape attempts would not be believed as movie scripts but they actually happened. There is a skirmish scenario or three buried here for the imaginative gamer.
