Osprey

Waffen SS Soldier 1940-45

by Bill Rutherford

WARRIOR SERIES #2, BY QUARRIE AND BURN

This book, second in the new Warrior Series, put me in a quandary. At first I thought this was a sneaky way to revise Osprey's previous book on the Waffen-SS, one of their early Men at Arms Series books (vintage 1971). After comparing the two, I am relieved. The older book dealt mainly with capsule histories of all of the major Waffen-SS formations. The authors of the present volume deal, in 64 pages, much more with how the organization worked and what made it what it was. The plates are quite nicely done, if a bit misguided, at least from the perspective of a wargamer or modeler. There are 12 pages of them; almost 5 pages contain good illustrations of handweapons and personal equipment. Much of this could've been shown to better effect on the person of a uniformed Waffen-SSer. One nice touch, however, was the two page spread on camouflage smocks a must for any 15mm or larger gamers (the figures, not the gamers ... ) who run Waffen SS. As ever, the text is informative and the photos and their captions are well chosen and interesting. This volume is available from your local game or bookstore for $11.95.
