THE TACTICAL NOTEBOOK, having experienced an increase in their circulation, has been able to reduce their subscription rate, now at $35 for 12 issues. Each issue has about 40 pages in looseleaf form. Most articles are contained on the two sides of a single sheet so that they can be sorted as the user prefers, although many articles are divided into sections to fit this format. Heaviest coverage is given to organization and equipment, followed by tactics and doctrine. The December issue has articles covering aspects of WWI, WWII, the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5, French Artillery of 1789, Army of Italy in 1875, the Native Indian Army of 1900, the Chinese 19th Route Army of 1932, and a tactical problem, among other things. Institute for Tactical Education, PO Box 125, Quanitco, VA 22134. THE BANNER is a 12 page tabloid published by Soldiers and Swords. The December issue has a very basic article on priming figures, some discussion of whether fantasy gaming is a Good Thing, an article on the difference between command and control, a description of the uniforms of the Compagnies Franche de la Marine of the French and Indian War, and a gushing review of a new fantasy/SF magazine. About a third of the newsletter is Soldier and Swords advertising, and the distinction between editorial and advertising copy is not always clear. $10/6 issues from Soldiers and Swords, 25 Fayette St, Binghamton, NY 13901. EAGLE is a new Russian military history journal, running 42 pages with many 4-color illustrations. Included with the magazine is a good English translation. The first issue has articles on the Guards of Peter the Great and Charles XII's Infantry at Poltava, both with many uniform and flag illustrations, part of a longer treatment of the operations on Ulm in 1805, Grenadier, Musketeer and Jager hat pompons 1802-1807, a description of some pistols in the Pushkin Musweurn, arguing that they belonged to an important Decembrist, and an article tracing the history of some ketdedrums captured from the Swedes at Poltava. This is interesting stuff, from sources and points of view not readily available to Western wargamers. This issue cost $10, plus $1.50 shipping, but check for current prices of available issues as exchange rates and shipping costs continue to fluctuate. Xenophon Group, 5218 Landgrave Lane, Springfield, VA 2215 1. XENOPHON GROUP has a number of other projects in the works. A book on the Army of Ivan the Terrible should be available by the time you read this, with specially commissioned books on the Great Northern War and the Army of Peter I (by a curator at the Hermitage) and one on the fortifications of Russia to 1800 (by Frunze Academy faculty) in the translation and editing process. Later projects include several textbooks from the Frunze Academy on the history of Russian tactics and operations in WWII. M.G.M. News, the newsletter of the Miniature Gamers of Michigan, is now edited by our Mexican American War editor, Bob Marshall, with layout by Steve Ward. This quarterly has a spiffy new look to its 14 pages. The Winter issue has articles on the armies of the Thirty Years' War, the battle of Vella Lavc1la, a report on Borodino '92, figure reviews, and news of the hobby, along with club news. $5/4 issues from Miniature Gamers of Michigan, 133 E Farnum Ave, Royal Oak, MI 48067. SCENARIOS FOR WARGAMERS is a new quarterly magazine, advertised as being written, edited, and published by professional military historians who are also wargamers. The first issue has good quality articles on the Spanish Civil War, The Spanish Light Cavalry of the Italian wars (1494-1504), and the Maison du Roi of the Thirty Years' War. There is also a short piece on the organization of the Austrian and Bavarian armies of the Seven Years' War. The centerpiece of the issue is a history of the Battle of Groveton (the first engagement of the Iron Brigade) followed by several game scenarios based on the battle, a sidebar on the Iron Brigade, and an article on command and control rules to be used in the game. My one complaint is that while there are several references to using different sets Of rules, and I was unable to find any recommendation for a specific set of rules, the scenarios refer to such specifics as dropping one column on a fire chart. 46 pp, $20/4 issues from PO Box 15172, Chevy Chase, MD 20825-5172.
