As of July 1942, a tenuous supply-line linking Hawaii to the South Pacific Area had been established. The links consisted of a series of island bases situated to facilitate the ferrying of long-range aircraft and the fueling of ships using the route. Backing up this supply-line was the United States Pacific Fleet, whose main power was distributed among five Task Forces. TF's 11, 16, 17, and 18 each consisted of
one carrier plus cruisers and destroyers for escort, TF 1 consisted of seven old battleships plus a squadron of destroyers. |
