2-24 January: Soviets continue to push back the Germans, especially around Moscow

6 January: British offensive against Afrika Korps in Libya halts; British troops rushed to the Pacific theater

21 January: Rommel pushes back British in Libya

14 February: British and American air forces begin intensive bombing campaign against German industry, which will continue until the Axis surrender

13 February: Operation "Sealion," the planned German invasion of Britain, is officially canceled

1 March-21 April: Soviet offensive surrounds 16th German Army near Leningrad; Germans successfully save the men (but not the equipment) and push back the Soviets

March: British and US monthly shipping losses reach 800,000 tons

31 March: Large-scale extermination of Jews and political prisoners begins

7 June- 4 July: the Germans attack and capture Soviet fortress port of Sevastopol

21 June: Afrika Korps takes Tobruk; British begin withdrawal to El Alamein, Egypt

28 June: major Axis offensive in southern USSR begins

7-25 July: Voronezh and Rostov captured

10 July: Rommel halted at El Alemain

7 August: General Montgomery appointed commander of British 8th Army in North Africa

23 August: Germans reach Stalingrad

31 August: Battle of Alam Halfa: Germans and Italians under Rommel fall to outflank El Alamein

1 September: the long battle for Stalingrad begins. US begins negotiating with Vichy French about landing in North Africa

23 October-4 November: Battle of El Alamein: Mongomery's 8th Army punches through the Axis after wearing them down

8 November: American and British forces land in French North Africa, encountering minor resistance, and march on Tunisia to catch Rommel from behind as 8th Army advances west

11 November-16 December: Germans reinforce Tunisia as the Afrika Korps retreats through Libya

27 November: Germans occupy southern "Vichy' France; fleet at Toulon scuttles itself

25 December: Allied forces halted by German counterattacks in Tunisia
