1939: The Struggle Begins

1 September: Poland attacked by Germany, followed by the Soviet Union on the 17th

7 September: France launches a half- hearted attack into the German Saar, as British units arrive in France

3 October: German and Soviet armies complete the conquest of Poland

4 November: the United States passes the "Cash and Carry" amendment to the Neutrality act, allowing Britain and France to purchase American war supplies

30 November-13 March 1940: Russo-Finnish "Winter War"

14 December: German battleship GrafSpee is sunk by British naval forces
