No real colonial subjects from Osprey over the last few months - watch out, though, for a Campaigns title on Inkerman just out - but there have been a few on the periphery, In the ever-popular Men-at-Arms series, there are two rather unusual early twentieth-century titles, 'The Russian Civil War (2); White Armies', written by Mikhail Khvostov and illustrated by Andrei Karachtchouk, and 'Chinese Civil War Armies 1911-49', written by Philip Jowett, and illustrated by Stephen Andrew. Both have nice artwork, and the Russian title is particularly atmospheric - a reminder of just how feudal much of Russia was, even in 1917. Also in the MAA series is a 'special collector's edition' title, celebrating the series' 25th anniversary - 'French Foreign Legion Since 1945', written by Martin Windrow, and illustrated by Michael Chappell. This, of course, is the classic post-colonial period for France, the time of Algeria and Indo-China, and this title does ample justice to the prominent part played by the Legion. In the Warrior series there are two titles by Stuart Reid; 'British Redcoats (2) 1793- 1815', illustrated by Graham Turner, and 'Highland Clansman 1689-1746', illustrated - inevitably! - by Angus McBride. Artwork in both cases is stunning - Angus really does enjoy going to town on those hairy clansman! - while the Redcoat title will be an important source of reference to anyone interested in the early British Empire. In the Elite series there is 'American Civil War Zoaves' by Robin Smith, neatly illustrated by Bill Younghusband, and 'Redcaps; Britain's Military Police', written and illustrated by Mike Chappell. This later is a particularly interesting title, although only a portion of it falls within the Colonial period; nevertheless, the activities of the Provost Marshall's troops are an overlooked aspect of military history.
