After Solferino:
Piedmont's Campaign in Central Italy

by Stuart Penhall and Raoul Palese.

I thought at first that reviewing a work of scholarship by a friend and dinkum cobber would provide a challenge, but Penhall and Palese have compiled an extremely valuable and informative account of a little covered aspect of the Risorgimento: the Peidmontese in 1860 and 1861, that is a delight to review.

Struggling against the spell of Trevalyen and Garibaldi, the authors provide us with a look into the seven month campaign that was conducted by the Piedmontese against the armies of the Italian Bourbons and the Papacy after Garibaldi's narrow victory at the Volturno. The actions at Pesaro, Perugia, Spoleto, Macerone, Garigliano as well as the sieges of Capua, Civetella, Messina, Gaeta and Ancona are also covered.

OOBs of Peiedmontese, Papalist, and Neapolitan armies are provided, as well as a chapter dedicated to a rare account of the Battle of Castlefidardo/Crocete, where the Papacy's Army was crushed along with its temporal power.

73 pages, spiral bound with acetate cover, with many b&w prints and maps of the actions. Digest format, Available under exclusive American license from Preziosi Press, 11017SW 125th Ave, Miami, FL 33186. Highly recommended.
