World War I Naval

Miniature Warfare Game Review

by Don Lowry

Author: John Hammond

Skytrex Ltd., our British distributor, publishes this small volume of naval miniatures rules for WWI. It is 8 .. high by 10" wide, with 24 ' pages and heavy paper covers. It is written for 1:3000 scale ship models (which Skytrex sells) but can be used with 1:1200 scale vessels by converting each 1mm of distance to 1/10".

Simultaneous movement is used, following this sequence: write orders (as many moves ahead as required), move vessels, fire guns, compute damage, remove any sunken vessels and mark any severely damaged ones. The sea scale is 1mm = 13 meters or 1:18,000. Each move represents one minute of real time. 1 knot = 1.33mm. You have to make your own turning circles from specifications provided.

Determining hits and damage are fairly complex procedures and a number of charts and formulae are provided. There are also rules covering torpedoes, mines, minesweeping, fuel limitations, submarines, ramming, and weather. Necessary data on numerous ships of the period from many nations are provided in an appendix. All in all a good set of rules selling in the States, for a very reasonable price of $1.70. It should be available from many military hobby shops, which can obtain it from Bill Dean Books, Ltd. of Whitestone, NY., Skytrex's exclusive US distributor.
