Raid on the French Coast 1760

British Briefing

by Robert McLean

Your orders are to land a force on the French coast at the village of Soutien Gorge where your objectives are as follows:

    1. Destroy the gun battery overlooking the harbour,
    2. Destroy any warehouses or stores.
    3. Capture alive Marshal D'Estrees who is believed to be visiting the village,
    4. Make a general nuisance of yourself.
    5. Escape back out to sea with the absolute minimum loss of life and equipment.

Your force comprises the following:

Four longboats each with a battalion of British infantry
Two longboats each with a battalion of Hessian infantry
Two longboats each with a 2 galloper guns each with 2 crew
    One longboat containing the staff

Each longboat is equipped with a map and you should issue separate orders to each longboat indicating its landing point on the coast in case the tide or current takes them off course.

As far as you know the French are unaware of your presence. Your scouting force lost a cutter yesterday in a clash with a French privateer but it fled before your force came over the horizon and is unlikely to have seen you. The enemy ship appeared to be badly damaged.

The Royal Navy is in position from the night before. They will launch the longboats out of visibility of the shore. This is because the enemy coastguard is quite vigilant in this area which is notorious for its smugglers who try to lure unsuspecting ships onto the shore using false navigating lights.

Longboats travel 8" with the tide and 4" against if they have a full crew (10 men) but proportionately slower if fewer men are on board. Minimum crew is 4 men. Longboats take one full move to beach. If beached they need a minimum of 6 men to move the empty boat back into the water at 1" per move.

SUNRISE, SUNSET AND VISIBILITY

From 20.00 to 06.00 visibility is zero (1")
    From 0600 to 0800 and from 18.00 to 20.00 visibility is 20".
    From 0800 to 1800 visibility is 100%.
The visibility rules apply on land as well as at sea.

EMBARKING/DISEMBARKING

Infantry take one full move to disembark and move-off the following move.
Guns take 2 full moves to disembark and move-off the following move.
It takes two men to move and fire the galloper guns.
    Half speed on the beach.
