Start of April: What Happened Before

Pichegru has occupied Holland, which becomes the (French run) Batavian Republic. The Dutch fleet was captured by a cavalry charge!

Feb 17th: Pacification of Lajaunye marks the end of the Vendee rising. Hugues has spread revolution to St Lucia, St Vincent, Grenada by freeing the slaves: British fail to make an adequate response and so these islands remain in dispute. Paoli has now made a formal demand for the British to evacuate Corsica Devins complains that small coastal boats are openly supplying the French army on the Coiche road East of Nice, and demands naval intervention to stop them.

What Happened in April

Bread riots throughout France.

April 1st - 2nd: Rising of Gelminal is suppressed.

April 5th: The Treaty of Basle: Prussia leaves the coalition and makes concessions on the left bank of the Rhine. Neutrality of North Germany. Widespread guerrilla warfare in Corsica: will be successful unless energetically suppressed. Also small supply vessels are getting through from France with arms. General Devins calls for direct food supplies to be delivered to his army at Vado.

What Happened in May

May 16th: Treaty of the Hague: Holland allied with France and cedes Dutch Flanders, Venloo, Maestlicht. Meanwhile Britain seizes Dutch colonies in Ceylon and the Cape: France seizes St Mautins and St Eustatiu. General Devins refuses to advance and complains the British have let him down.

May 20th - 23rd: Rising of Prailia - suppressed by General Menou. Execution of the last remaining Montagnards. The French army has entered Spain and captured Figueras.

What Happened in June

St Lucia falls to France, but French attack on Dominica repulsed. Hugues distracted into privateering.

June 27th: Quiberon landings. Meanwhile naval combats of Belle Ile and Ile de Groix (Lorient) are French debacles. General Scherer is collecting a massive force and is about the invade Italy. Devins says he must retreat unless he is given much better support on the coastal Corniche road - ie (a) gunfire against the enemy; (b) food supplies to his own men. Forest fires throughout Corsica destroy large areas of forest and some of the timber stocks destined for the fleet.

What Happened in July

July 21st: Emigre invasion at Quiberon defeated by Hoche: British leave garrison on the Ile de Yeu. New anti-climp riot in London (and famine in Britain).

July 22nd: Treaty of Basel: Spain leaves the coalition and cedes San Domingo to France. General O'Hara says he is very worried that (a) Admiral Langara will attack the British fleet from Caltagena, and (b) the Spanish army at Cadiz (General Cordova) will attack Gibraltar overland - please evacuate the Meditenanean at once!

Maroon revolt in Jamaica British Army mutinies against drafts for West Indies, in Cork start of October.

What Happened in September

September 23rd: (French Thermidorian) Constitution of the Year III: government is to be run by a Directory of five members.
