Atoll Surprise! 8 May 1972

The Speed of Heat: New Scenarios

by Malcolm Pipes

Background: Showtime 100, crewed by LT "Duke" Cunningham and LTJG "Irish" Driscoll (with one MiG-21 already to their credit), along with the number two Phantom, crewed by LT Brian Gant and LT Jerry Sullivan, were on a MIGCAP covering a strike force ten miles south. They received a warning from "Red Crown" and broke left to evade a MiG intercept. A Mig-17 had popped out of the haze to make a gun attack on Grant's Phantom.

He missed, but as the undamaged Phantom accelerated away, the MiG fired an Atoll missile, something of a surprise to the Phantoms as the MiG-17s were not supposed to be able to carry Atolls.

In the ensuing melee, two more MiGs appeared. No F-4s were lost, but Showtime 100 shot one of the MiGs down to score that crew's second kill of the war.

Maps:

Game Length: 15 game turns.

The MiGs are silver, the F-4s uncamoflaged. 80th F-4s are sighted by MiG #1. The F-4s are aware of MiG #1's position dueto "Red Crown" AEW radar but do not have the MiG sighted.

2. F-4 Loads: Stations 2,4= two AIM-9G IRMs each. Station 3 = 2200L FT. Stations 6,7,8,9= AIM-7E.

3. MiG-17 Loads: Stations 1, 2= AA-2A AtoIlIRM.

4. Crew Quality: F-4#1= R(Tactics master)/R. F-4#2= R/V. Migs=R, V, R.
