Friday: The Seminar

by J.D. Webster

Immediately following round three, we had to hustle up to the Air Power Seminar which Tony and I were hosting. As a result, I was unable to determine the final scores from the tourney, so I told everyone I would post them later.

Secretly, I was actually fairly frazzled from the hectic day and just a little dismayed by how the tourney, with all its rules quibbling, had gone. The scoring system had not produced any clear leaders and the competition was so close I couldn't even make judgement calls.

In a fit of frustration, I made a snap decision to continue the tourney into Saturday as all the would be finalists were signed up to be in that day's competition anyway. I announced at the seminar that any players who had actually scored kills during the day's three rounds qualified as finalists. The rest, and any new shows, would be placed in a consolation round. There was no protest, so everything seemed OK. Leter, Tony would rightly, but with poor timing and no tact, critique my shoddy scoring system.

The seminar itself was fairly well attended and Gary "Mo" Morgan, the designer of Flight Leader, was there also. Tony covered the evolution of our newsletter and future plans, while I doted on all the new and wonderful, I hope, second edition cehanges that will appear in the next Air Superiority game coming, soon (Origins 1991 as of latest info).

I also mentioned Gary Morgan's new game design in work, "IRON HAND", a solitaire campaign game of the Air War over North Vietnam. Hopefully, he'll preview that for us in the near future. The hour flew by very quickly and, all too soon, it was time to leave.
