Origins `90 Tournament Report
Part 1

Introduction

by J.D. Webster

Well, boys, another year and another chaotic weekend. ORIGINS '90 was typical of the last three years and yet it was different. I looked forward to being at Atlanta as it was a new location, but I was to be disappointed in many ways.

First of all, the convention was combined with Dragon Con, the annual Atlanta Sci-Fi/Fantasy event and the organizers kind of lost control of things. Boardgaming events were few and poorly run, the Fantasy types overran the place and for whatever reason, there just weren't as many people there as I would have expected.

The miniatures turn out was fairly good, but overall, I would have to classify Origins as lackluster. Even the "Dealer Area" had little to offer with few celebrities and even fewer new products. The awards ceremony was a whitewash and smacked of politics even worse than in previous years. So if you didn't make it this year, you didn't miss much... except us.

The Air Superiority tournament drew 20 hardcore competitors and we were our usual rowdy good-time selves. So much so that the conventions organizers even came up to on Saturday and said that Air Superiority seemed to be the most successful boardgame tourney as it continuously generated the most excitement and noise.. a sad commentary on the rest of the boardgame events. Nevertheless, we air- gamers made sure we had fun, as always.
