The Dusty Archive:

Russian Army Study Group

by Paul Chamberlain

Russian troops fought all over Europe, at the battles of Austerlitz, Eylau, Friedland and Borodino and were instrumental in the downfall of Napoleon. David Chandler wrote in his book On The Napoleonic Wars p181, 'Any consideration of the vast canvas of the Napoleonic Wars would be hopelessly incomplete without the consideration of the troops and achievements of Holy Russia'.

This is a new Study Group which aims to consider those achievements, not only against France, but also Sweden, Denmark and the Ottoman Empire. It also intends to consider the failures, such as the reforms of Tsar Paul I. As well as researching the uniforms and organisations, the group will also study the characteristics of the Russian soldier, the drill, the effect of war on the Russian civilian, and any topic the members may wish to examine.

It is planned that this research will be published in a newsletter - The Kiwer. One day, if enough members wish to put this research into practice, it is hoped that a Russian re-enactment regiment may be formed.
